BIOGRAPHY

 Allan C. Fisher

 Allan C. Fisher, Associate Professor of Art, was Chairman of the Department of Art at Dakota State University in Madison , South Dakota (1990-2000).  Allan is 1st generation Irish - American.  His parents were both born in County Donegal , Ireland . He was born in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania July 4, 1946 and studied at Tyler School of Art 1964-66. Allan studied with world renowned sculptors George Segal and David Smith (1965). His studies were interrupted by the Vietnam conflict.  He completed his B.V.A. degree in Drawing and Painting with a minor in Sculpture at Georgia State University in 1973 and his M.F.A. degree in Sculpture at Radford University , Virginia , in 1990.

Fisher has exhibited in local, state, regional, national, and international juried exhibitions.  His work has appeared in numerous galleries, including the Museum of Science and Energy and the Museum of Fine Arts in Oak Ridge , Tennessee , the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia , the Virginia Museum ( William King Center ), the Radford University Art Museum in Virginia , and the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings.  Highlights of his career include: 

·         Recognition by Michael Monroe, Curator of the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

·         National Competition Purchase Award by Anselmo Carnini, Curator of the Art Institute of Chicago , Illinois .

·         Personal invitation to create a sculpture for the permanent collection of the Notoragency Gallery, Warsaw , Poland .

·         Juror’s Award of Distinction at the Mitchell Area Juried Show at the Oscar Howe Art Center , Mitchell , SD from juror Connie Herring of Iowa .

·         Juror’s Award of Distinction at the National Art Competition at University of North Dakota

·         Best in Show Award from juror Jerry Kruse (SDSU) in the 15th Annual Juried Art Exhibition at the Community Cultural Center in Brookings , South Dakota .

·         Best in Show Award from juror Tom Rickers ( Massachusetts ) in the Annual Area Art Show at the Nobles County Art Center in Worthington , Minnesota .

·         First Place Award and Commission for Permanent Outdoor Sculpture Collection from the City of Brookings/Brookings Arts Council, South Dakota .

·        Recipient of the 1992-93 Emerging Visual Artist’s Fellowship from the South Dakota Arts Council, Pierre, South Dakota.

·        Commission for Permanent Indoor Sculpture at the First Presbyterian Church, Madison , South Dakota .

·        Regional competition of ten states, Sculpturewalk Outdoor Sculpture Competition, Sioux Falls , South Dakota .

·        Commission for Permanent Outdoor Sculpture, “The Way”, St Peter Lutheran Church , Orland , South Dakota .
